Ideas for random encounters #1: The Bridge of Compliments
The party comes upon a stunning marble bridge with a surface of gleaming golden runes. There’s even a cute sign at the foot of the bridge, “Thank you for walking across me”. How polite! But as soon as they start to walk across, the runes flicker red, and the bridge starts dissolving beneath them like a sugar cube in tea! The bridge is too long to run across before it dissolves. If they go back to the foot of the bridge, the sign has changed, “Your footfalls are very graceful and pleasant.” You see, this bridge only holds weight if you’re giving someone a genuine compliment. The bridge is actually a mimic that is very polite and just wants to make new friends. So, ‘Nice armor, fighter!’ buys you a few steps, but the bridge can tell if you’re faking—insincere flattery = 1d6 falling damage as that section crumbles. Will your party shower each other with heartfelt praise, or start shoving each other toward the safe spots? Bonus: The bridge loves creative compliments—compare the bard’s poetic ode to the wizard’s hat to the barbarian’s grunted ‘You hit good.’
