Surprise in 5.5e is kinda lame. But, surprise in 5e is overly complicated and can make it difficult to balance encounters correctly.
Here’s my suggestions for homebrew rules that you can implement to make surprise more rewarding WITHOUT making it so your totally badass encounter becomes a cakewalk for the players at your table.
