Feeling like I failed my players, I need to get something off my chest and work through the process so you don’t make the same mistake I did.
I made a mistake recently D&D session regarding player choice: instead of giving my players an obstacle and letting them decide how to overcome it, I told them which skills they needed to roll.
I just thought I was helping move the game along and keep the action fast paced. Instead, I was taking away one of the best parts of the TTRPG experience: player agency.
So this is me talking through what happened, why I think I got it wrong, how I came to realize I got it wrong, and what I’m going to do differently for next time.
This advice could apply to any TTRPG game because it’s the choices we make as GMs and players. Also, the best way to approach your GM if this happens to you as a player.
