Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG: What We Loved, What We Didn’t, and What We Still Don’t Get

We played Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG. Now three GMs are getting together to talk about what worked, what didn’t, and what we’re still trying to figure out.

This Sunday at 2 PM, I’m sitting down with the GM who ran our first DCC RPG session, plus another GM who played alongside me, to talk about what we’ve learned from actually playing the game and digging into the rules.

All three of us want to run our own Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG games, so we’ve been going through the rules, building characters, and asking a very important question:

How do you actually run a game this open-ended?

We’ll talk about:

• What we think of the player-facing combat system
• How the game keeps players involved during both their turns and the mob’s turns
• Whether the freedom of character creation leads to creativity or choice paralysis
• How much freedom the game gives players and what that means for the GM
• The surprising opportunities for roleplay in a game that’s built around dungeon crawling
• How much preparation you need when the players can do things the adventure never anticipated
• Where we’re still confused about the rules
• What we’ve learned from our first game that we want to carry into our own campaigns

And we’ll finish by asking each other some questions about what we’re still trying to figure out before we take the GM seat ourselves.

This isn’t a formal review or a rules lecture. It’s three GMs who have played the game, are reading the rules, and are trying to figure out how to make Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG work at the table.

Join us Sunday at 2 PM and bring your questions about DCC RPG.
